Absurdity? Yes, but not absurd. Necessity? Sometimes, the rest of the time it is neither absurdity nor necessary. That is to say, if it is not necessary then it is absurd, for making “art” is more often absurd, for, by the very reference to the self-conscious contextualisation relating to what one feels one should be doing one ends up doing anything apart from what needs to be done. What needs to be done, if anything, is a making sense process, a revealing of the world in its disquiet, not from the modernist artist hero – surely we have seen enough of these buffoons – but from a collective global consciousness; an echo sounding from the multitude. That is my work. My significance is my insignificance. I am not an individual; I am an entity within a culture. This is not my work. I don’t exist. I am you, and sometimes you and I contribute to the culture’s whale song, that deep moan resonating underneath the turbulence of human folly. I am absurd and not necessary. The absurdity of my art is that I did it at all. It must have been a necessity.
