Nataraj Artspace

A new art gallery, Nataraj Artspace opened on June 27th at the Old Ropeworks in Kennet Place in Marlborough.

The name Nataraj comes from Shiva Nataraj, the Lord of the Dance. The dancing figure of Shiva Nataraj expresses the rhythm and harmony of life, He is shown with four hands to represent the four cardinal directions. He rests on a lotus pedestal, the symbol of the creative forces of the universe. This cosmic dance of Shiva is called 'Anandatandava,' meaning the Dance of Bliss, and symbolizes the cosmic cycles of creation and destruction.

Keef Miles has sent this beautiful poem by Ruth Peel to describe it:

"The source of all movement, Shiva's dance, Gives rhythm to the universe.
He dances in evil places, In sacred, He creates and preserves, Destroys and releases.
We are part of this dance This eternal rhythm, And woe to us if, blinded By illusions, We detach ourselves from the dancing cosmos, This universal harmony…"

The gallery is being developed and run by Geoff and Keef Miles in conjunction with Akasha Yoga, Pranamotion, Kaya Drumming Circles and the Wellbeing Clinic at 6 London Road. It will be showing both traditional and contemporary art. It will be open all day on Sat 5th July and on subsequent Saturdays (and at other times to be arranged).

Many activities will be going on in these spaces related to yoga, dance and music, art, literature, talks, performances, clubs and societies, community groups, performing arts...and much more!!! Kaya Drum Circles, run by Alex Miles will also be held there. The creative interaction between artists, musicians and practitioners of meditative and therapeutic activities is expected to yield some fresh inspirations which will give Nataraj Arts a unique focus for artistic development within a holistic world view, and add to Marlborough’s growing number of interesting galleries.

Several artists are already planning a collaborative project for the future which should result in some fascinating new stroboscopic images of figures in movement. Come to Nataraj Artspace to see an incredible range of art, we look forward to welcoming you.
