If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Drawing, Painting
I am...
an artist who makes drawings and paintings. From 1993-1996 I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths’ College, London. Now I live and work in Warwickshire.
About my artwork
My work features loose, elliptical forms that appear frozen in movement. Some shapes are barely complete, while others appear solid and fully formed; they draw our attention or remain obscure. There is abundance, confusion, emptiness and calm.

The drawing suggests very simple narratives; the forms share a common direction, there is a sense of movement, there was a beginning and there will be an end. The viewer is free to imagine the pace of their movement, their origin and their demise.

The activity of drawing - the exploration of line, colour, transparency and opacity - underpins this. Tension and harmony appear between the well-defined shapes, faint marks and mistakes. Opacity and translucence bring levels of weight and depth. Presence and near-absence are invoked, so the forms become notional entities appearing and disappearing.
Artists I like
Hidekazu Tanaka, Gary Hume, Minako Nishiyama, Hondartza Fraga, Roger Hiorns, Fiona Rae, Mali Morris, Biggs and Collings, Michael Day, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, Richard Diebenkorn, Mark Grotjahn, Karla Black, Kristin Baker, Helen Frankenthaler, Yuko Nasa, Klari Reis, Rosemarie Fiore, Gareth Haynes, Max Hymes

Hey Mark,
Really enjoying your work, the sense of movement and space are quite compelling, also your color choices are appealing for me. I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Hi Mark, I really like your drawings particularly no.s 3,5,8,10 & 15, the sense of movement and contrast seems to be heightened in these in comparison to the other drawings. I will be uploading some new images shortly, it would be good to get any feedback when these are uploaded, I will let you know once these are up. Cheers Eddei

Hello, thanks for your reply. I can't seem to add you as a friend, though. Some technical problem. I use all sorts of media in my work. When I work on paper I tend to refer to my output as drawings. They tend to be made in preparation for titled works.

I use gouache, watercolour, coloured pencil, soft pastel, charcoal, wax crayon - basically whatever it takes to get the contrasts I am looking for in my work. I have learned something about liveliness and vitality looking at your images. I hope I can make my work more vibrant.

All the best, Mark
