Mark Dicey – 2011

Mark Dicey’s practice is interdisciplinary and encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, sound and music. The work itself is very much process driven and the disciplines feed into and off each other into a multifaceted practice.

The process of making the work is reactionary; the give and take decisions are evident in the final work. Colour, marks, shapes and forms are explored and interact to create both harmony, and at times disharmony, in an open and honest inventive process.

There is a similarity in improvisation between the disciplines and it is through this open creative exploration that the compositions are formed.

Ultimately the works are abstractions which are influenced by the interaction with the media, the artist’s surroundings, the urban environment, the human figure, sound and ritual.

During the past twenty five years Mark Dicey has entered into many creative activities in the Calgary Arts Community. Exhibiting in artist-run centres, public galleries, the commercial gallery setting and independent projects at temporary sites. Some of the activities within the Calgary Community have been to sit on boards, committees and juries related to the arts as well as being a founder of the artist relief society for professional artists, Elephant Artist Relief (EAR) – www.elelphantartistrelief.com
