I am interested in examining the question of what is needed from art as Jan Verwoert discusses 'since the nature of the other remains fundamentally indeterminable. For who would know what anyone really needed?' I care about others and about art and through my practice I stage encounters in which the rights an individual has to their own body and to space can be discussed.
I find an affinity with artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn and Christoph Büchel, in whose practice people become chief protagonists and whose work continues to question what art can be. In seeking to make work that does not look like art my aim is to empower others, with whom the initiative lies to decide what is art and what not. The autonomy I intend, therefore, is, as Jacques Ranciére sets out, 'the autonomy of the experience, not of the work of art'.
What exhibitions are good at the moment?
Thomas Hirschhorn - Swiss Pavilion Venice Biennale 2011
Andrew Lanyon - Von Ribbentrop in St Ives - Kettle's Yard Gallery Cambridge
