If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Drawing, Painting
I am...
a Japanese artist residing in Cumbria.
About my artwork
I’m always hurling a question to myself “what is art after all?”

Surrounded by hyper-excessive visual media, almost being paralyzed by mediacracy and information manipulation, what does painting mean to me compared with other numerous artistic expressions, especially living in the epoch of post-Marcel Duchamp, who revolutionarily wiped out the meaning of art, or else seemed to declare “Art is dead” in presenting a “ready-made” toilet as a work of art? I admit, of course, and enjoy its profound argument totally, though...

What does art mean to humanity, then, since paintings existed before writing was invented in human history? How can I challenge this intricate contemporary society by means of visual art, if at all? I do believe that art still has the power to convey some elements of core meaning to humanity with its own language.

My aim is, however, to create something simple yet thought-provoking, portraying someone iconic, somewhere universal, precious moments, eternal fragments and a light in the darkness. Using photographic images as means of entwining memory and reality, speculation and word, I try to create snapshots of the ever-changing present moment, embodying semiotic images of our time.

I employ a brush hatching technique using Japanese sumi ink and acrylic, which I’ve invented and developed in recent years. This is also inspired by the classic method "disegno", based on drawing, established in Florentine school in early Renaissance era. Technically I’ve enhanced its conception combining with some latest neurological study so that somehow I might attain to show fragments of the full picture of “how a human being sees”.

Thus, through my creative endeavours I’m exploring how to bridge East and West, as well as our artistic heritage and contemporary understanding.
Artists I like
Albrecht Dürer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, William Blake, Édouard Manet, Andy Warhol, Andrew Wyeth, Thohaku Hasegawa, Tadashi Kawamata, Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Yousuf Karsh, Robert Mapplethorpe, Diane Arbus, Sebastiao Salgado, Bruce Weber, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Andrei Tarkovsky
Interests
history, art history+theory, iconology, aesthetics, philosophy, theology, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, semiotics, psychology, neuroscience, photography, film, etc...
The centre of the artworld is
nowhere and everywhere

Hi Hideyuki, thanks for the comment.
Love your enigmatic images and your subtle use of color. Also, I like your position on painting in relation to our post-Duchamp world.
Best,
Steve

again Hideyuki, your work is thoughtful and beautiful, I particulary like the ' beach ' scenes, as it is something I often do with my dog when I need to 'think' jan :)
