I am...
Currently, Gordon lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. His works are exhibited in galleries in New York and New Jersey. He is part of an emerging group of international artists whose abstract works draw upon the global roots of painting, merging and fusing a diverse range of sources and traditions into an exciting contemporary abstract idiom.
About my artwork
Like a poem, my paintings begin with an observation, a feeling, a hunch or an idea, a memory and are then refined so that every color, every shape and form, every gesture is woven together. Like music my paintings begin with a theme or a phrase and evolve endlessly as an improvisational performance. Working with egg-oil emulsions, oil-resin varnishes, and oil-resin-beeswax, I build the paintings up in layers to create a luminosity or light that glows from within the painting. I make my own mediums as a way to connect with my materials, to appreciate them, to know them. Like taking apart a watch to put it back together to see the inside. Discovery, curiosity, playfulness.
Artists I like
Arshile Gorky, De Kooning, Joan Mitchell, Fionna Rae, Matisse, Giacometti, Diebenkorn, Hans Hofmann, Frank O'Cain, Fra Angelico, Rembrandt, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, David Hockney, Frank Auerbach, Cy Twombly, El Greco, Henry Moore, Anthony Caro, Louise Nevelson, Stuart Davis, Rothko, Larry Poons, Bruce Dorfman, Jenny Saville, David Smith, Richard Tuttle, Agnes Martin, Carroll Dunham, Amy Sillman, Bill Jensen, Cecily Brown, Ghada Amer

Hi
Just bouncing around on the site, and being a believer in 'happy accidents' I found your page, your work is most appealing, very expressive with an apparent dialogue with colour, movement and brush strokes, especially the water colour on paper. I also thank you for the blog post on Sun K Kwak, I have recently been considering masking tape, both the residual from masking out, and the colour marks left on the decorators paper tape, once removed, it exposes interesting marks left on the tape which can be later incorporated in other work. I have just started using thin plastic tape as a drawing tool, to see the U tube post, it has opened my mine to the greater possibilities for which I thank you.

Hello Gordon

Thanks for getting in touch - I especially like your series of small VV Park watercolours: lively, yet open, almost sparse - just enough, eh? It's the old "knowing when to stop" down to a tee.

I've started experimenting with watercolours (again) myself - I'm hoping I'm going to get somewhere this time. Not an easy medium to get to work for you, is it?

Have you seen my old friend Kane Cunningham's watercolours - he's doing some very lively stuff on old Northern English and Scottish estates, and has a great painting of the beach at Scarborough. They may be landscapes, but they're almost abstract: -

thanks Gordon. appreciate it. just got back from the hospital. yeah, the way I see it we all have the right to disagree, but disagree in the most intelligent way possible. I think your work is successful because it doesn't make me apathetic about it. I have a reaction to it. thanks for getting involved in the discussion. wish I could find more of this type of dialogue on here. do you suggest any more groups? thanks again.

Thanks Gordon for checking out Urban Renewal - a project that is considered one piece mad of many small drawing-paintings ... That piece took a turn even this weekend when it doubled in size - now there are 18 pieces ... and even more diverse. I wonder if this process becomes about the inspiration and the balance of form and expression .... I think so ....

Busy Is As Busy Does...

Well, I've not been here for some time because I've been BUSY! Yes. The latest on the Fringe Front is that we have launched a twitter feed @thetruepattern which you should follow if you're interested in what unfolds with that whole affair. I don't run it, I just supply some of the info to the tweet master. In addition, we have a myspace page which is serving as a…See More
