I am...
Garth Gregory was born in Sydney Australia 1979, he studied under Richard Fahey in the Painting deparment at Unitec School of Design in New Zealand from 1998-2001. During his studies at Unitec he completed a 6 month exchange with the Hoch Schule Fur Kunst Bremen. Since then he has exhibited regularly in New Zealand and for the last 5 years in Berlin Germany.
About my artwork
They are the result of short bursts of activity and long periods

of contemplation. From their individual starting points the paintings had no significant

concept or direction and any narratives seen in their completed states are results of the

process of their creation. My paintings are slowly been built up, each new aspect adding to the

narrative and directing the future work. Furthermore I utilize photographic source material,

which material generally comes from personal photographs, the internet, books and other

random sources. This imagery is often digitally processed and the ensuing digital collages

become the working sketches for the next phase in the paintings. It is also important to

note that it is not the skill involved in applying paint that interests me but the narrative that

is created by pushing one image up against another. Aesthetically the individual aspects of

my paintings often appear rough, perhaps even unfinished. That is because often they are.

I feel this helps to give a roundness to the works. They are indeed very busy but because

the details are somewhat unfinished they tend to be recognizable without distracting from

the image as a whole.

The time period involved is perhaps the most important aspect in understanding how my paintings are created; each phase in a painting is not only influenced by what was previously

there, but also by my mood and thoughts during the periods in which the activity takes

place. As these periods are few and far between, each time I rework the canvas I generally

approach it from a new perspective.

In conclusion I would like to say that my paintings are open to interpretation. It is my wish that people viewing the paintings take with them all that they can.

There are no boundaries and it has always been a joy of mine to be told the narratives of

my work rather than to explain them.
