About my artwork
Presenting a synergy between pictorial and written languages, David Willis’ work questions the action of looking and understanding visual imagery.
His painting considers how we consume images by clarifying the didactic relationship between title and content. The directive visual signifiers prompt the viewer's existing visual knowledge to inform their reading of the artwork; therefore the title is visually interpreted by the physical plastic components.

Several paintings such as Taking It In Turns with Elastic, (2011) describe rhythmical painterly marks descending the canvas. They alternate their beginning and end from one side to the other, creating a conversation between the opposing uprights — two off-scene protagonists in plastic dialogue.
These loose brushstrokes resemble attempts to scribble-out or erase the content beneath, an intentional provisionality, which reinserts the material object-ness of the paintings. By repeating these scribble markings Willis creates his own pictorial language which upsets our perceived pictorial hierarchies.

Willis’ work is punctuated by his physical relationship with material interest, utilising collage, recycling previous artworks and embracing liquid pigment; this alludes to its origins in commercially initiated billboard poster-art. He takes inspiration from film posters, glossy magazines and television commercials, as well as visual artists including Albert Oehlen and Jacques Villegle.
