- Charley Peters works in drawing, photography and print, exploring the liminal space in between technology and tradition, figuration and abstraction, chance and control, information and meaning. From painstakingly constructed photographic series to laborious hand-drawn renderings of mechanically produced materials, Peters’ concerns are with the meticulous re-presentation of the strangely familiar. Her current work explores the relationship between the autographic image and the visual language of mechanical reproduction; found images are manipulated on photocopiers, through digital printers or photographic processes, at times becoming source material for the production of intricate analogue drawings in which hand-drawn marks replicate the image traces left by mechanised technologies.
Drawing as a representational, factual practice aids us in developing an understanding of our complex world. Series of drawn lines converge to inform, explain and record our experiences of being. Peters’ current works assimilate both controlled and gestural techniques of mark making, and encompass mechanical and analogue methods of generating ‘drawings’. These drawings are a testament to the generative potential of destructive processes; images that begin as representational are often repeatedly rubbed away, crossed out or reinscribed, developing and demolishing the image in the same instant. Through these processes it is conceivable that forms of subtraction, however violently destructive, can also be seen as constructive. Utilising source material from the mass media, archival images and popular culture, Peters’ work explores the relationship between visual information and meaning.
