About my artwork
My discipline is drawing and mixed media.
My drawing method using black biro and found paper makes reference to the Graphic novel. In particular, 'ProCon Brendan' refers to this, where my brother is drawn with his mouth wide open in different positions and in different angles. The paper is fun notepaper that claims to help you with a tough decision by listing the 'pro's' on one side and the 'con's' of your dilemma on the other. There is a small box at the bottom that you tick if you have your 'decision made'. The work can't help but refer to political connotations especially the Lisbon Treaty debate of this year.
I also use the 'classroom' as subject matter for the drawings. The 'RECESS' drawings from 2008 are a result of my part-time teaching post at the local school becoming extinct due to Department of Education cutbacks.
Another current research exploration is 'domesticity'. I explore issues of family and home and my relationship with my studio that my father and brother built. Although this is a very privileged position I won't bring concrete or any destructive material into the studio. It is precious but binding.
Currently I am immersed in a project of drawings that describe and narrate the construction of the studio. The narrative explores the relationship I have with my father as he takes on the role of teacher and I take on the role of student or child.
