About my artwork
I experiment with liquid materials (paints, varnishes, oils) to explore the marks they produce and their physicality. I work to exploit the beauty and behaviour of these materials; their seductive movement, sublime textures and unique personalities, to give the marks stature allowing viewers to engage with my work on a sensory level.
Exploring paint spillages onto paper I have developed a method of sticking the paper to board with a flat finish giving the marks unusual rigidity. This process has allowed me to investigate the interrogation of the surface of paper by various paints. Glossy spillages which are shiny, seductive and reflective in their simplicity contrast paint stained paper marks which give illusions of depth and complexity. Imperfections, tears and marks on the paper, blister surfaces with energy and life adding a sense of reality and humanity through a shabby aesthetic. Through negotiating contrasts between the perfect and the imperfect I hope to convey the raw and beautiful qualities of paint.

Hello Beth!
Sorry I missed the Backlit inaugural show - I'm a bit tied up with teaching out of town until Christmas, as well as trying to keep the painting moving.
Maybe Backlit could have a profile on ArtReview to help publicise shows? There are quite a few members in and around Nottingham (see http://www.artreview.com/group/nottinghamUKartists for some)
I'll try to get to see the show asap.
Cheers, Mik
