If you're an artist, what kind of art do you make?
Painting
I am...
a figurative artist working in oils. Graduating from Newcastle University this summer, July 2010. Recently accepted on a 2 year MA course at the university where I can continue exploring painting the human figure. The application of paint and paint marks have become an important part of my relationship to the work.
About my artwork
The face and the figure in place and space underpins my work. Until the beginning of this year my work primarily consisted of a single figure or face within the work, this has recently developed into exploring the theme of 'crowds' and multiple figure paintings.
Artists I like
Gerhard Richter, Vermeer, Lui Xiaodong, Marlene Dumas, Michaelangelo Pistoletto, Francis Bacon...
Interests
Cinema, theatre, opera, food, gardening, conversation, art dialogue...
I would like to welcome you to my blog where I upload my paintings. I carry out the work fairly quickly using media images from daily newspapers as a starting point. www.poppytodd.blogspot.com
I am intrigued by your Random and Control series 1 - 7 - the area around the small square images shows an interesting use of colour in contrast to the female faces - it resonates with antiquity like aged wallpaper, Venice, old Masters. The small images draw me in to the painting, like the revealing of a private moment, a memory - giving a feeling of tragedy, deep sadness, invisibilty. Really good work. Sioux
