ArtReview Power 100 Award

Dear ArtReview,

Your ArtReview Power 100 Award (Science/Damien Hirst tops the 2008 ArtReview Power 100, ArtReview, November 2008) is an auto-deconstruction of the contemporary art scene which is all about spin, self-promotion, media, marketing, and making money and absolutely nothing to do with art as aptly confirmed by Hirst/Science who came first.

Damien Hirst makes money not art as Hirst cannot (literally) make art: Hirst cannot draw, Hirst cannot paint, Hirst cannot… Continue

Liked your comment on the top 100. Left one below you. I would send a friend request but I have yet to figure out the process.

Hi Alexander

exactomente. When an artist dies, people write down what their strong point was, or in the case of say pablo picasso, despite being a capitolist, what his several thousand strong points were. When hirst makes it to the finish line I think people will write down that he was able to make sculptures that raised interesting questions, a shrewd business proprietor. But there will also be the lingering reality that he was detested by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands (?) of people, for simply being arrogant. dali was beyond arrogant but I think many art lovers and collectors simply let it go in the face of the fact that he was a dedicated artist who really created his own language.

I am going to post a blog/review on this v soon. I hope that you can get your article published - as I am certain many galleries in London would love to read it!!!!

Also this issue of paintings being priced for simply the sake of the market (1500 pounds for a bowl of fruit at the Adam Gallery in Bath???????? With a meager 7 hours of production???????) will eventually collapse on itself. I am a practising artist with about 7 dedicated customers, underpriced work, but I tell them all the time that many of the galleries who price these pieces in the 2000 pound range don't actually sell alot of them. Thereby simply one gallery that could shift say 100 originals in one month for 200 to 400 pounds would be a gargantuan news story. It is obvious.

Ok best fr luke ::~)

Dear Luke: I was delighted you liked my letter regarding Art Review's rather obscene and absurd Top Power 100 Award: it clearly demonstartes that this is all to do with making money and not making art. What would happen if we all gave our art away free? What would its true value be? Hirst represents the dumbing-down of our Alzheimer's Aesthetics today where the retards rule! Despite all his Mongol Money, Hirst has a poverty of ideas and images: Hirst is really very poor without power without pull. Best regards, Alex V.E.
