I rather resent being called an artist. It's demeaning. Total and complete devotion to a way of life, sacrificing everything is not easy. A person is either The Artist or they are not.

all of my life i knew that i wanted to do something ,searched and searched and then there it was, i was an artist, forever creating always creating. My life without art would be meaningless, i suppose that makes me a "REAL ARTIST"

when many people who visit your shows, people who look at your art start calling you an "real" artist, you're an artist

Thinking of myself as an artists has always been a bit intimidating. Actually calling myself an artist most often feels like I am boasting. Is it, I wonder, my place to call myself an artist? With this dilemma always making itself known to me, I tend to think about it this way....

I am a painter. History will decide whether or not I am (or was) an artist.

Once you say that you are an artist that means that you are still don't know what that word means.

"An artist is a man who invented an artist in him"

When I was just a wee thing, I was sure I was going to be an actor. I followed that dream for years and years. After I completed high school I went to acting school and then off to New York to begin what I was sure was my destiny: a career in the theater. Six years after arriving in New York, and after a rather uncelebrated career, I left the city for a small seaside town called Provincetown on Cape Cod. It didn't take long before fate brought me into the company of one of Provincetown's better known painters: Bonnie Whittingham. Bonnie was to become my mentor and pillar of strength. It was she who told me that I had the hands of a painter and put the brush in my hand. The rest is history.

So it would seem that I always knew I was to be an artist... I just didn't know what sort of artist's life awaited me.
