There are some wonderful artists here in artreview and I think we should do something together. Ideas, anyone? What kind of collaborations could we make? Let's use this space for discussions! Kika

Hello everybody! I asked for ideas for collaboration, and we got a great one from Marty McCutcheon (check the previous discussion for referral). He suggested we make a video version of the Exquis... Continue

I ANSWERED ZACH BY EMAIL, BUT I'LL POST HERE IN CASE ANYONE ELSE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM:

Hey dear Zach,
You're using my favorite camera! But let me tell you a few things about its 24p.
The camera shoots in 24p (23,976 frames per second, to be exact), but it records on a MiniDV tape, which is NTSC; therefore, 29,97 interlaced, not 24p. So, what happens is that this camera makes a automatic pull-down to transform the material from 24p to 29,97i. And it makes it very well. This means that for each 4 frames, it has to interpolate, to invent 1 new frame that doesn't exist (some complicated math involved here to build a believable frame).
When you import this material to FC, DON'T USE THE 24P PRESET!!! Only use it if the recorded material is real 24p (like Panasonic HVX200 makes when you record on the memory card). In this case, it's just a regular NTSC material, that is, a 29,97 interlaced 720x480. The only thing is that this material has suffered a pull down, so every 4 frames you gonna have a fake 1.
So why do we shoot in 24p??? Because the texture of the image is much more beautiful, because it feels like film, because film is 24 frames per second. Even when it becomes NTSC, it still has the nice motion blur. Motion blur is everything!
Anyway, when you export a frame, be aware not to choose the fake interpolated frame (it's easy to spot them, they're the frames that look worse!). But probably, specially if the subject is in motion, you're still gonna feel the interlacing. Because it is interlaced; like I said, it's the NTSC.
Now I'll give you 2 Photoshop tips for treat the exported frame:
go to the menu IMAGE – choose PIXEL ASPECT RATIO. There you'll have many options. Still pictures have squared pixels, but frames that come from video have other aspects. You have to choose the right one (in you case, D1/DV NTSC). This will deliver the right aspect ratio to your frame. I saw that the photo in PAM was too rectangular, not in the NTSC original aspect ratio.
then go to menu FILTER – VIDEO – DE-INTERLACE. This might work or not, sometimes it does help with the interlacing feel, specially if the frame is not the interpolated one.
Well, that's it, I hope I was clear enough. Any questions, just shoot!

hey kika, it's a panasonic dvx 100b. we have been filming in 24p, and regardless of whether we have been putting the FCP setting to 24p, it has a somewhat fractures look where some frames bleed into the next. if you look at the picture on my pam page of my mother you can see this on her hand.

hi zach,
some questions for you:
which camera are you using?
does it look interlaced while you're editing or even after you render and watch it in quicktime?
Is the sequence preset (audio/video settings) to the exact same preset as your recorded material?
Please answer so I can help you.

hey i have a question for everybody. my brother and i have been shooting a lot in 24p recently, but for some reason it looks interlaced at timed when we load it into final cut, even when the settings are at 24p. any advice?

thanks kika, the lights are en route. we got 3, and two of them alternate between 300 and 600W, so i think it'll work out great.
here's an old video of ours from way back.

hi zachary, each video camera has a different way of percept light. The sensitivity is different, the gain, some have slow shutter, some get too grainy without lots of light, some are ok. you have to try. and also depends of what kind of effect you want.
I would say that generally you could shoot with two 600watt if it's not professional, I mean, videoart usually is more flexible than shooting an advertising for example.
(my husband is director of photography so I do understand a bit about lighting).

hey everybody my brother and i have a question. basically we are going to get continuous tungston lights with soft boxes, and were wondering if two 600watt lights is generally enough for filming videos. anybody into lighting? -zachary

A bit of warning, this video is about 13 minutes. I'm planning a re-cut to 5 minutes. Faster and with the belly shots more in focus and a new audio track. Consider it footage and consider to turn off the sound:
