Finished in 2001 & entitled "Autoportrait with last ever cigarrette" - it had taken me two years to paint it!
I say that self-paint the soul, so I painted this in an hour, frantic and without prior sketches.

Old work,
Oil on small mdf panel height approx 6inches. Circa '93

Study for - Van Gogh Made Me Do It

Small Oil Sketch for 'Goya Made Me Do It'

Thanks for posting, W. T.

I find these uncomfortably funny. A strangely grinning head wrapped like a ham; emotional pain and psychological disturbance simultaneously exposed and hidden by the mask of madness. This kind of paradoxical duality (exposed/hidden, funny/sad) is often what makes art, for me, effective and lifelike. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers for the kind words, feel free to come visit my page and check out my albums. A lot of earlier images had to be scanned from 35mm slides of the work so resolution isn't as good as I'd like but it's passable to give you an idea of where I started etc, my scanner isn't really up to the job:o/
PS While you like the constraint/restraint pics, here is the oil study of my friend and band member 'DC' study for large canvas on stretched/primed paper.
Best wishes
Bill

The image of this self-portrait has been displayed on "about me/contact me" page of my website for a few years. Then a good friend of mine, a fellow painter, told me it was the reason nobody ever contacted. So, following his advise, I replaced the picture with a photograph, - and it helped! Still, I can't help thinking sometimes: why?

Hi Valery Koroshilov, just looked at your self portrait, I like it, you should have posted it into the thread instead of attaching(easy to view for the lazy people like me! :)
I appreciate your comment on my self-portrait. You are most kind. As for the thread instead of an attachment, - I tried several times, but just could not upload the image. I should try it again some time. Many thanks.
