Please support the Save Our Studios campaign and visit it's ArtReview page for info on the fight to stop Stone Soup expansion plans ousting CAN, Egerton and Oldknows studio groups.
How can a "Community Interest Company" have the moral right to kick out nearly fifty artists? That's fifty Nottingham "micro-cultural-industries" out of business by March 2009!
Please voice your support!

Hi there

Just wondering if anyone has some good knowledge they might like to share about exhibition venues for rent in Nottingham - trying to put on a show late October/ early November concerning the way work interacts with the gallery wall.

Cheers.

Hi Regarding the invitation to submit to virtual exhibition. Have resubmitted as there is a key sentence I omitted.

Working Title: ‘Heaven Equal’
The title is from the translation to Chinese of the English word 'Counterbalance'; typically defined as meaning ‘contrast with equal weight or force’. The Chinese characters are:抵消
Theme:
This proposal for a virtual exhibition is the result of visiting Chongqing as a part of an outward mission from the East Midlands promoted by the Arts Council of England, East Midlands and Chinese Business Bureau. The artists from the East Midlands represented practitioners in painting, sculpture, installation, performance and public art.

The brief glimpse of China, experience of Chinese culture and the opportunity to meet with Chinese artists highlighted the significant difference in the origin and construction of our respective languages. During our visit the artists had access to professional interpreters and it became evident that translation from the traditional Chinese ideographs to English necessitated the use of 'figures of speech' that are usually reserved for poetry or to evoke ideas for which no specific word or terms have evolved in our West Germanic English. Particularly noticeable where information boards, using Chinese character, which were then interpreted into English and poetic phrases were used.

The word ‘Counterbalance’ refers to experiences during the trip, in which translation indicated the differences in our cultural backgrounds, (a concept which could be used refer to the human experience of assesing or coping and adjusting to unfamiliar situations) from this dialogue there emerged an idea for this opportunity to explore how these differences may be identified in the production of visual art.

Exhibition:
Artists from the East Midlands and Chongqing, working in any medium are asked to submit an image produced in response to the word ‘Counterbalance’ and the Chinese ideographs 抵消interpreted here as ‘Heaven Equal’ from one of several possibilities describing the same meaning. These will be shown alongside images produced by Chinese artists provided with the same information. It will be possible then to investigate how differing origins in language indicate differing visual arts heritage and how this is will work in a contemporary art exchange.

The above discussions about a spontaneous desire to explore the potential outcomes of translation on a single word. This process will form the basis of an experiment presented as an internet gallery exhibition. The work will reflect the 'word as form' and the differences (and often amusing results) experienced by artists from distinct cultures in trying to discuss their creative work as practicing artists.
