Dada,–no–NADA Motel. It was formed last year. Fully self-promoted, non-funded and we had 60 artists of all the disciplines participate last year. Artists rented rooms, promoted themselves in the media and opened their motel room door. That's it! Now we do have someone act as stage manager because we rent the lounge there. It's called the Trocadero Lounge–Frank Sinatra played there back in the day. She will be putting musicians and actors, on stage–maybe poets too if they don't try to make everybody cry–oh and cock fighting–not real cocks JEEZE!
I curated a show this yearand it hung until the end of March in a museum in Vegas. It's called Selections From Dada Motel. Google it.
We changed the name for the event this year because Dada was a hundred years ago, and we're really not anti-artists. Now it's Nada Motel. As in 'expect nothing'–nada. Next year, who knows what it'll be called.
Funny thing, the group of us has grown; we're letting everybody in on the discussions as we go along and a small group of mostly the original organizers had, a couple months ago, voted to change the name. I understand the concern but everybody cried "What about BRANDING?"
So instead of anti-artists, I feel that we should brand ourselves ANTI-BUSINESS people, because obviously that's what we as artists have become–business people. Now I'm not against selling art but I personally AM against becoming an art festival administrator. And don'tcha' just love confusing people. Nada Motel, reno nevada, end of June '08.
