A special thank you to the AFA for hosting our first HEP screening in China

Thank you to Carlo Fatigone (curator for Faticart Association of Contemporary Art - Italy) for his ongoing support and collaboration and to all his artists screened with us.

Warm welcome to Rebeca Lei - AFA Macau & Beijing, she has an event page HEP artists may wish to visit -

"I've created an event page on facebook for HEP Macau:
http://www.facebook.com/leirebeca?ref=name#/event.php?eid=314766435... "

Also I have taken this from her Artreview profile page -
And I am sure Rebeca will keep us posted on any news/press/articles and documentation on HEP Macau 2009 with the AFA.

glad you with us,

To celebrate Art for All Society (AFA Macau) 2nd Anniversary, a video exhibition Human Emotion Project (HEP) International Artists using Film & Video, will open at 6:30pm on Friday, 13 of November. This exhibition will have a special arrangement showing four different themes respectively in four weeks which means audiences have to visit the gallery every week during this period to appreciate all the 43 video works.

AFA set up the first local commercial contemporary art gallery in December 2007. Since the opening, 11 local art exhibitions were organized and more than 200 latest local contemporary artworks were showcased. AFA had also opened the first Macau contemporary art centre in Beijing one year ago which exhibiting works by Macau artists and creating cultural exchange opportunities with renowned contemporary artists in China.

This exhibition -- Human Emotion Project (HEP) International Artists using Film & Video, brings together more than 40 video artists from all over the world, including USA, Sweden, UK, Israel, Jordan, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Canada, etc. Our local artists, José Drummond, Alice Kok, Ng Fong Chao, Cindy Ng and Bianca Lei will also participate in the project. HEP, founded by Alison Williams, has toured internationally in Australia, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Macau is the fifth city and we will be bringing this show to AFA Beijing afterwards. The project will continue its showcases across the continents.

Video is one of the most prolific visual media in use today. Drawn together by the art that they share via the Internet, artists with disparate cultural and aesthetic identities approach the internal workings that exist in all humans. The exhibition, curated by José Drummond, will be presented in four weeks, each with a different theme exploring different topics, which includes “Paradox” (14-20 Nov), “Loss & Desire”(21-27 Nov), “Transformation” (28 Nov – 4 Dec) and “Fantasy”(5-12 Dec). “Paradox” investigates the contradictions between documentary and performance, fact and fiction, order and chaos. “Loss & Desire” explores the ambiguity of misplaced feelings from the philosophical aspect to the emotional. “Transformation” concentrates the mystery of life changing, the spirituality of isolated gestures and sounds and the manipulation of these elements compose a space of reflection and intimacy. “Fantasy” draws inspiration from the apparent fascination of lively graphic imagery.

Human Emotion Project (HEP) International Artists using Film & Video will exhibit from 14 of November until 12 of December. The opening will take place at 6:30pm on Friday, 13 of November at Portuguese Bookshop Gallery (S Domingos 18-22 Macau). Opening hours are from 11am to 7pm everyday except Sunday. The exhibition is sponsored by the Secretariat of Social Affairs and Culture of Macau SAR and Macau Foundation. For enquiry, please call: (853) 2836 6064 or email: afamacao@gmail.com.

HEP MACAU

Press Release

Exhibition: Human Emotion Project (HEP)
Venue: AFA @ Portuguese Bookshop Gallery
Date: 14 November (opens) - to 12 December 2009
Hours: 11AM to 7PM
Media: Video
Curator: José Drummond

Video is one of the most prolific visual mediums in use today. The Human Emotion Project (HEP) Macau selection links together more than 40 voices from all over the world. Presented in 4 weeks, each with a different program exploring different topics.
HEP was presented in Australia during February, in Italy during March, in Spain during April, in Portugal during May and in Macau in August. Exhibitions and screenings are also being prepared in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Romania, Greece, Iran and USA.

Drawn together by the art that they share via the Internet, artists with disparate cultural and aesthetic identities approach the internal workings that exist in all humans. Emotions are inherently difficult to explicate. How does one describe fear? We know it when we feel it but how can we share, through the paltry use of language, our experience of it? Moving images, mostly embellished with sound, extend the expressive possibilities beyond what can be accomplished through language or even static imagery. By employing the largest palette of creative possibilities, film and video artists from around the world strive to externalize those complex driving forces that we all enjoy and endure and that bind us, as humanity, together despite our differences.

Alison Williams, HEP Founder & Director

“Paradox”, “Loss & Desire”, “Transformation” and “Fantasy” are the chosen proposals for understanding video art, its own multiplicity and the reunion around the imaginative subject of The Human Emotion Project (HEP).

The artists in “Paradox” investigate the contradictions between documentary and performance, fact and fiction, order & chaos. What is real and what is staged? The absurdity of real life, the ambiguity of movement and the enigma of space are some of the perceptions raised in “Paradox”.

“Loss & Desire” explores the ambiguity of misplaced feelings from the philosophical aspect to the emotional. The strong deficit of engagement, the desire for connection and the interior struggle for clarity are permanent in each work.

The power of “Transformation” is a vibrant and integral part of our lives. The mystery of life changing, the spirituality of isolated gestures and sounds and the manipulation of these elements compose a space of reflection and intimacy.

“Fantasy” draws inspiration from the apparent fascination of lively graphic imagery. The looping of the modern era, the provocation of literature, the encounter with the fantastical and the employment of technology indulge the process of these visual stories.
