Following a successful festival of film, art, music and poetry this summer, the Through an Exile Lens Project returns to London with a photography exhibition by some incredibly talented, young and emerging artists, offering authentic and diverse perspectives on contemporary Tibetan life.

The situation in Tibet remains critical. In March of this year, peaceful protests swept across Tibet, met by a brutal and ongoing crackdown by China. Despite the Chinese Government’s promises in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics this summer, Tibet remained virtually sealed - to journalists, to travellers, and to Tibetans themselves. 2008 has provided the greatest opportunity Tibetans have had in over five decades of occupation to make their voices heard, evidenced by these peaceful protests and the subsequent worldwide protests by the Tibetan exile community and their supporters. This celebration of Tibetan visual culture seeks to add to these voices, fostering a deeper understanding of the Tibet issue at this critical time, exploring the rich and vibrant culture of a land that has long captured the imagination. Now, as the Tibetan community approaches 50 years in exile, it would seem fitting to present this work in what is a telling and moving portrait of Tibetan youth in exile.

The exhibition will feature the following artists, focusing on life in Dharamsala, Northern India, exile home of the Dalai Lama since 1959 and the heart of the Tibetan Diaspora:

* Tenzin Choejor - Official photographer of the office of the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala

* Ayesha Kapur and Siya Singh - two fresh talents on the Delhi art scene

* Raise Tibetan Flags Campaign - a non-political initiative seeking to encourage people worldwide to raise Tibetan flags. Work from the RTFC recent International Peace Exhibition will feature in this exhibition.


The Through an Exile Lens Project is a non-profit making initiative supporting the following organisations based in the Tibetan exile community:


* Tibetan Children's Village photography club (www.tcv.org.in, www.bridgesweb.org) - TCV is a thriving educational community supporting Tibetan youngsters in exile

* Gu Chu Sum (www.guchusum.org) - supporting political prisoners in Tibet and ex-political prisoners in exile

* Raise Tibetan Flags Campaign (www.tibetanflags.org) - encouraging people worldwide to raise Tibetan flags in support of those in Tibet who we hope one day will have the right to do so

* Green Tara Foundation (www.greentaracharity.com) - working on poverty alleviation projects serving disadvantaged children of all backgrounds in the Indian Himalayan region

So far I have organized five Spaltenstein projects with a total of 180 participating artists. Many of them joined all projects.

This year, I was invited by ART WORLD PROJECT to participate on their project. I found, this is an exciting project and was inspired to do more than just simply make a contribution as an artist. I decided to combine the ArtWorldProject with our Spaltenstein philosophy of sharing art. I would like to offer my organizational skills and art project experience to make it easy for you to participate as well.

Peace is a very broad term, a peace of mind or inner peace is just as important as peace between two human beings or nations etc. etc.

Yes, I agree with Mike's comment below. Fighting for peace is an oxymoron such as cruel kindness. A contradictory statement it may be however, I believe the fight comes from within. To have the abilty to walk with peace in one's heart no matter the circumstance of other's actions around one. I think that the "fight for peace" starts by setting an example and those who follow will follow and those who cannot, are still fighting themselves and therefore must be comforted or at least empathized with as none of us are perfect and we all have our struggles. A non-judgemental existance takes pressure off the ones around us and therefore helps them to open up and realize their own struggles. Once these struggles are brought to the surface, they can be dealt with or at least contemplated and thus, a momentum of positive change has been put into effect. Spreading peace through leading by example. One person cannot change the entire world, however, one person can change the immediate world around one. A ripple effect. Then I guess, if you wanna go the extra mile, you can have a super hero complex and fight injustices on a larger scale...or create art that stirs the viewer to contemplate their own heart and mind and establish their own truths.
