curious about other's methods of securing that spine.

I have only really used a quick sew (with machine or by hand) down the middle, or used a simple elastic down the middle (I make zines and not that thick of bookprojects). Simpler seems to suit me just fine, but I understand that sometimes simpler dosen't last as long.

Any links or gems of wisdom about hand-binding that oh so important spine?

hey
i found that the binding which works best for me for simplicity is japanese binding,or 'perfect binding' these are both easy to teach yourself, they take a little longer but are well worth it....you can probably find a step by step guide by googling these terms, if not, let me know and ill mail you method pics :)
i just googled japanese binding and this page has picture instructions
good luck
