Contemporary artists & photography | Online Art Magazine | ArtReview

As is the seasonal norm, and in a daily series of postings, ArtReview's critics and columnists pick their favourite exhibitions, performances, books or events from the past year, and look forward to those of 2012.

Laura McLean-Ferris, ArtReview's editor at large, notes the following:

'Much of what I'll remember about what I've seen in 2011 is characterised by the increasingly floaty, liquid conception of reality that we have appear to have ended up with: Jennifer Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad; Jan Tumlir’s sparklingly bright book Matthew Brannon: Hyenas Are…; Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch’s Any Ever exhibition at Musée d'art Moderne in Paris (and PS1 in New York); James Richards’s show at Chisenhale and performance night with Ed Atkins and Haroon Mirza; dancing a Viennese Waltz under Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s Untitled (Arena) in Danser Sa Vie at the Pompidou; the reality television show Made in Chelsea; Christoph Büchel’s Picadilly Community Centre.

James Richards, Not Blacking Out, Just Turning The lights Off, 2011. Commissioned by Chisenhale Gallery, London.

I’m looking forward to Daria Martin’s survey show at Milton Keynes Gallery; Becky Beasley’s Art Now show at Tate Britain; Lara Favaretto’s PS1 show, the opening of the Tate Oil Tanks; Hans Peter-Feldmann at the Serpentine; the British Design show at the V&A and (what the hell) the Ballgowns exhibition there too.'
