The Tacheles Art House Berlin will host an extraordinary art exhibition project in September 2008. The international group exhibition THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME features fourteen young and innovative artists who have been invited to create works especially for this exhibition project.
THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME – at first sight, the exhibition’s title might appear contradictory.
“This is my world! I feel at home here!” – these expressions are frequently used. „World“ and „Home“ seem to imply the same thing but on a serious note, they turn out to be ambiguous.
What is home? Where is home? Is it the place of birth or where you grew up? Your own four walls, the city and/or country where you live? Is it only geographic factors that define home, or aren’t intellectual, social and temporal aspects playing a decisive role as well? What if this world is not to be or cannot be my home?
Home means a refuge, providing shelter and safety. Yet this can change: Home initiates emotions like pride, love, closeness and consequently home has to be defended, protected against intruders, thus foreigners have to be repelled. Home can cause dissociation and discrimination, xenophobia and racism.
"This world is not my home, I am just passing through" (citation from a gospel hymn). This world is not just my home. We have no exclusive right, but share the planet with innumerable other creatures. Yet, this reality is often ignored – just think of the enormous need of energy, oil industries and their consequences to the global social and eco system.
The group exhibition THIS WORLD IS NOT MY HOME, organized by young independent curators Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung und Simone Kraft, focuses on these questions. The invited artists have approached the subject in a very personal way. It was not the intention to find answers, but to pose questions. Thus various approaches to the topic were developed with means of the manifold possibilities and mediums art offers. Many works can be seen for the first time at the group exhibition.
